Whenever a prominent honors show draws close, there’s always an outcry for the addition of new categories to recognize underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.
A fellow writer made the case for a horror game category. It would be amazing. So would board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification supporting my request remains most pressing and significant. Here's the proposal: We need a category for puzzle games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Categorizing art by genre is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and it will always generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that movie academies avoid this approach. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise in the world of video games, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.
Present Award Structure
Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications effectively encompass a lot of ground, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
Not so for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to put them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Which classification works among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games released every year without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.
- A renowned logic title received no recognition for anything during that awards season
- Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
- Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
- Only a few brain-teasers barely qualified for niche award types
Significance of Puzzle Games
Frequently they represent small games, but the art behind logic titles is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as the most-played games worldwide maintaining this status for over a decade.
The iconic tile-matching title competes with well-known building titles claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it also contends for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and engaging with almost every other genre.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. It would be easy to populate a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.
And to reiterate, these include experiences without proper classification in important events. Logic title developers operate at the challenging frontier game development, producing among most fundamental forms of the video game form. Just like film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait 35 years.
