Right-leaning reactions to the partial release of files involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with certain backers of the previous administration highlighting the prominent appearance of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in images, while others lamented how heavy redactions portray Donald Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable manner.
Justice Department Justifies Redactions with Fervent Hyperbole
Administration representatives justified the redactions with intense hyperbole. “Never in U.S. history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been so transparent with the American people about such a delicate legal issue,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a six-page letter outlining the censorship process.
Concerns Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While Trump's name and image are visible in portions of the documents, the extensive redactions raise significant questions about the information may be hidden behind them. Some Republicans immediately called for increased openness.
“People are raging and walking away,” posted Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a online statement, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie said the redactions violate the law, and implied that a subsequent Congress may attempt to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, today’s file dump egregiously does not adhere to both the spirit and the letter of the act,” he added.
Some Conservative Commentators Rally Behind the Disclosure
However, some conservative commentators and former President allies came out strongly in support of the administration.
The release—from a DOJ run by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes scores of documents that are entirely redacted, and many of the men depicted in pictures have their identities obscured.
But a few do not, featuring prominent figures like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, in particular, allowed certain rightwing figures to go on the attack.
“It’s quite ironic how the political left wrongly claimed President Trump of being a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to release Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” stated conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“New documents show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a woman that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one reason Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Clinton Spokesperson Releases Response
Bill Clinton has repeatedly said he was aware of zero criminal activity by Epstein and has never been alleged to have engaged in any misconduct. “The administration has not been concealing these documents for months only to release them late on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a statement.
“This is about protecting themselves from what comes next, or from information they will try and hide forever. Therefore they can publicize as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photographs as they want, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the response concluded.
Overall Rightwing Commentary Remains Subdued
However, broader comment on the political right was relatively muted after the disclosure, particularly when compared with the loud calls for transparency that came before the legislative vote to enact a bill requiring the documents' publication.
Loomer, who not long ago secured press credentials at the Pentagon, had been one of the most vocal advocates for a full release. Earlier this year, she criticized the Justice Department generally and Bondi specifically after a set of rightwing influencers were given physical folders of materials that included little previously unseen information.
