No fewer than thirteen people killed and 98 hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's key government projects.

The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine what caused this incident,” stated the country's president.

The president announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his government's economic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid speed, surpassing predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had also fueled persistent apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an prior collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition urged an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This pause was proposed until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."

In response, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these strategic projects.
