Learners Fight Back Over AI-Led Higher Education Class: "We Could Have Simply Used ChatGPT"

Several students at a British institution shared deep frustration after discovering their career-focused module was largely taught through AI.

New Path Dreams Dashed

One student and another participant were among 41 participants who enrolled in a software development module hoping to transition into cybersecurity through a publicly-supported apprenticeship initiative.

Yet their hopes were soon lowered when they faced computer-created slides being read by an synthetic voice.

When we handed in projects that was AI-generated, we would be kicked out from the institution,” remarked the student during a recorded discussion with his lecturer.

Several Complaints and University Response

Participants multiple times expressed concerns about the automated content, however the institution seems to have continued using automated resources.

Interestingly, the college upholds firm guidelines controlling learner use of AI, saying that turning in automated work equals academic misconduct.

Growing Phenomenon in Higher Education

This situation echoes a larger movement across educational institutions increasingly using AI tools for instruction, course material generation, and personalized feedback.

  • Current surveys show nearly a fourth of UK teachers now use AI in their instruction practices
  • Government reports have hailed generative AI's ability to revolutionize education
  • But many participants find the reality demoralizing rather than innovative

Obvious Evidence of AI Generation

Learners observed various signs suggesting computer-created materials:

  1. Varying language patterns between American and UK English
  2. Suspicious file titles
  3. Basic information with occasional mentions to inappropriate US laws
  4. Narration suddenly switching to a different accent before reverting

Learner Disappointment and Career Concerns

James expressed significant anxiety about his career prospects, stating he felt trapped with this course” after dedicating considerable effort.

Another participant, going through a occupational shift, stated he had selected the program for valuable knowledge rather than merely a certification.

“Being seated there with resources that is simply not deserving of anybody's time,” he stated, “when you could be devoting that time actually participating in something worthwhile, is truly discouraging.”

In spite of institutional claims about preserving academic standards, learners felt the final introduction of real lecturers was insufficient and delayed” to fix their core issues.
