LA Battles Historic High Temperatures Just One Week Following Severe Winter Weather.
Following a week of significant rainfall that led to inundation across parts of the city, LA is now confronting unseasonably warm weather for this time of year.
Record-Setting Heat
On Friday midday, the thermometer soared to 91°F (33°C) in the city center, as reported by meteorologists. This easily surpasses the prior high for February 27th, which was eighty-eight degrees Fahrenheit and was recorded in the previous year.
"Very warm conditions" were labeled on NWS charts for the region.
Public Health Advisories
Authorities stated that Friday's conditions posed an "elevated risk for heat illness" for those at risk. Their advice suggested:
- Keeping well-hydrated.
- Reducing outdoor activities during the afternoon hours of the day.
- Never leaving children or pets unattended in a parked vehicle.
A Sharp Weather Swing
This dramatic increase in heat comes on the heels of a powerful winter storm that pummeled the area earlier in the week. That event unleashed heavy snow, strong winds, and thunderstorms to mountainous regions, leading to flash flood warnings for countless residents.
Unfortunately, the conditions also resulted in a deadly avalanche in the Lake Tahoe area, which resulted in nine fatalities.
Temperatures Easing
Forecasters predict cooler conditions is coming. Temperatures were predicted to fall to around 16 degrees Celsius (61 Fahrenheit) in the city by Friday night.
Additional areas that hit ninety degrees were Burbank, Woodland Hills, and Long Beach. Meanwhile, Westwood, Camarillo, Santa Maria, and Oxnard were forecast to see the high 80s.
For the weekend, central LA can see readings in the eighties, with mid-70s temperatures on tap for the week ahead.
