The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
