Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements from captain Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made those words in multiple conversations following England's defeat in the second Ashes series versus Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had allowed his message to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

But, following the opener scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "weak men" observation subsequent to England suffered a loss in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards took a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and third Tests.

Before this match, he revealed his players had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the guidance from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their previous tenure in charge.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," noted the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do something special going into this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia need just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an insurmountable three-nil advantage with three Tests.

A loss would prolong the English team's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes loss.

This series will be completed in only 11 days of cricket – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," admitted the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably hard touring here to face them. They were the front-runners and they've proven why."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's innings in Adelaide likely secures questions about his immediate place in the side, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in the team's second innings on day four, extending his modest returns versus Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and averages just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

But, Crawley insisted any notion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is noise externally. There is no chat of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he concluded.
